TPMS Light On? What It Means and What to Do

The tire pressure warning light is easy to ignore. It is also one of the earliest warnings that a tire is losing air.

What the light means

TPMS stands for tire pressure monitoring system. A steady light usually means one or more tires are low on air. A light that flashes for a while and then stays on usually means the system itself has a fault, such as a sensor.

What to do

  1. Check the pressure in all four tires with a gauge when they are cold.
  2. Fill them to the pressure shown on the sticker inside the driver's door.
  3. Look for a nail, a screw or damage in the tire.
  4. If the light stays on, get the system checked.

Why it comes on in cold weather

Air pressure drops as the temperature falls, often by about 1 psi for every 10 degrees. That is why the light often appears on the first cold morning of the season.

Sensors wear out

TPMS sensors have small batteries that run down after several years, and a failing sensor can keep the light on. Our TPMS service checks the system at your location.
