Dead Battery: Jump Start or Replace?

A dead battery usually shows up at the worst moment. The question is whether you just need a jump or a new battery.

By TireDoc Mobile Service ·

Signs of a weak battery

  • The engine cranks slowly
  • You hear clicking when you turn the key
  • Headlights dim or the dashboard flickers
  • The battery is three to five years old or older

When a jump start is enough

If you left the lights on or the car sat unused, a jump start may be all you need. After a jump, drive the car or let it run so the charging system can top up the battery.

When to replace the battery

If you need a jump again soon, the battery is probably worn out. A test can also show whether the problem is the battery or the charging system. A new battery is cheaper than being stranded again.

A safety note

Do not jump start a battery that is cracked, leaking or frozen. Call a professional instead.
